Post 16 and care leavers
For parents and carers
We’re here to help you and your young person navigate the important transition into post 16 education, training, or employment. Our support includes:
- understanding post 16 pathways
- preparing for college, apprenticeships, employment or training
- help with applications, enrolment and paperwork
- information about financial support and bursaries
- guidance on where to access high-quality careers advice
Our aim is to make the move into post 16 education feel positive, informed and well supported.

For schools, colleges and training providers
We work in partnership with post 16 providers to make sure young people, especially those with care experience are supported to achieve, attend, and engage. This includes:
- attending KS4 summer term PEP meetings
- facilitating transition meetings to ensure smooth handovers
- advising on suitable provision for vulnerable learners
- helping sustain attendance, engagement and academic progress
- supporting young people who may be at risk of not in education, employment or training
Together, we aim to create environments where young people can thrive.
Financial support
Young people with care experience may be eligible for a range of financial support to help them move confidently into further or higher education, including:
- the £1,200 post 16 bursary for care experienced learners
- the Higher Education Bursary (up to £2,000)
- additional university support such as accommodation help, fee reductions, grants, or mentoring
We can help young people and carers understand what funding is available and how to access it.
