Targeted interventions
This is a space designed to support you in delivering effective, evidence-informed provision for children and young people with SEND.
Here you will find a range of resources, strategies, and intervention approaches recommended by visiting practitioners, including Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists (SaLT), and other specialists. These materials reflect current best practice and are intended to support you in responding to identified needs with confidence and precision.
Our aim is to support teachers and practitioners in building strong, practical intervention offers that are purposeful, consistent, and matched to individual needs. Whether you are refining an existing approach or looking for new ideas, this section is here to help you translate assessment into meaningful action.
By working together and drawing on specialist expertise, we can continue to strengthen provision, build shared understanding, and improve outcomes for all learners.

Introduction to targeted interventions for SEND
Targeted interventions are structured, evidence-informed approaches designed to support children and young people with SEND to overcome specific barriers to learning, participation, and wellbeing. They are a key part of a graduated response, providing additional, focused support that sits alongside high-quality teaching and inclusive practice.
Targeted interventions help practitioners support individual needs in a planned way. By breaking challenges into smaller steps, they help learners build skills, gain confidence and make steady progress. Effective interventions can improve attainment, support social and emotional development, and encourage greater independence.
Helping all learners to thrive
Interventions should not be seen as stand-alone activities, but as part of a coherent cycle of assess, plan, do, review. This ensures that support remains responsive, effective, and centred on the individual.
Regular monitoring and evaluation are essential, enabling practitioners to adapt provision, celebrate success, and ensure that every learner receives the support they need to thrive.

Recommended intervention approaches
We have collated a range of recommended interventions - some of these may sit across different categories depending on the pupil’s needs and the formulation.
At a targeted level, Educational Psychologist (EP) advice typically emphasises structured, evidence-informed interventions that are delivered by school staff, with a focus on building capacity rather than creating dependency. Where specific resources are named, these reflect those most commonly recognised or used in UK practice, rather than being a prescribed or exhaustive requirement.
