Reintegration Team (RIO)
When a child or young person is returning to school after a period of absence, the RIO team can help.
The team work in partnership with the school, parents and the child themselves, to draw up an individual reintegration plan which:
- addresses the child’s worries about returning to school
- makes sure the right support is in place for them at home
- sees the right welcome is ready for them at school, before they return

How the RIO supports
The allocated RIO usually takes the time to understand the child’s experiences, feelings and hopes in order to identify and map out the right pathway to return to school.
For many children the RIO will continue to support the reintegration plan by working 1-1 with the child to get back to school.
For other children, the RIO may only be needed to map the reintegration plan out, and other professionals and the family can take it from there.
Advice and guidance
The RIOs also offer advice and guidance to any parent or professional wanting to discuss helping a child back into education following a period of absence.
