Assess, Plan, Do, Review
The Assess, Plan, Do, Review (APDR) cycle is at the heart of the graduated approach to supporting children and young people with SEND.
It provides a structured process that enables schools to:
- identify needs early
- implement appropriate support
- continuously evaluate its impact
Rather than a one-off intervention, APDR is an ongoing process of reflection and adaptation. It ensures that support is responsive to the individual needs of each pupil and grounded in a clear understanding of what is working and what needs to change.
Assess
Identify strengths and needs
This includes:
- assessments and observations
- pupil and family views
Plan
Set goals and plan support
For example:
- agree outcomes
- plan interventions
Do
Implement the support
For example:
- deliver interventions
- monitor progress
Review
Evaluate and review progress
For example:
- track outcomes
- adjust as needed
SEMH
